The Other Birthday Shirt

When I grow up, I want to be just like Karen. Which is why I decided to rip off her style when some crazy embroidering lady told me that three weeks was not enough advance notice to make me the world's greatest birthday t-shirt for Alexis. So I "borrowed" the design, sought out the perfect fabrics, and ironed/sewed away. It's not exactly like the one I tried to get made, but it lived up to my expectations:

Why, yes, I am proud of myself. My sewing machine hates me with the fire of a thousand suns, so it's quite an accomplishment when I actually finish a project.

  1. I love that shirt, and I love the fabrics you chose. Okay, so you make creative cupcakes, AND you sew?! If you're domestically challenged, then I'm just plain retarded.

  2. that shirt is adorable! i'm so very impressed. i can't even sew buttons on, just so you know. so, a shirt like this would cause my fingers to tie in knots and i'd probably jab the needle into my eyeball at some point.

  3. That shirt ROCKS!! And now I feel like a terrible mother because my kids went shirtless on their birthdays. Well, not *completely* shirtless, but birthday shirtless.

  5. My completely unprofessional instructions:

    1. Find image that you want to plagerize online. Save it to your computer then use zoom to make it just the right size for the t-shirt.

    2. Place a piece of paper on your monitor and trace the pattern.

    3. Cut out each piece.

    4. Place the pieces of paper on your fabric and trace.

    5. Cut out the fabric.

    6. Make the fabric into iron-ons using the funky fusable stuff they sell in fabric stores.

    7. Iron away.

    8. Use a zig-zag stitch to secure the edges. If you are doing a birthday shirt that will only get worn once, this step is probably unnecessary. However, the stitches do make it look more "finished."

Or, email Karen. She will probably do all the work for you, thereby saving you hours of grief.

  6. Oh, and I blame Holly at Anglophile Football Fanatics for my sudden-found need to have a t-shirt for every holiday. Her little guy had FOUR Christmas outfits. I felt inferior.

  7. That just does it. You are officially an over-achiever. An 8 step process? The cupcakes? A little zig-zag stitch around the edges? You may no longer claim "domestically challenged" status. The product was really cute and I am jealous!

You kick ass you! You gonna go in business, toO??

And, I'm sorry she did that to you. I would've thought that was plenty of time.

    And, there were ONLY four.

  14. How did I miss this post?! Again, the shirt rocks the icing right off my pathetic little cupcake. And coordinates very well with her bling.

I LOVE that shirt! Maybe even better than the one Karen sent you (shh...). You did awesome.

I wish I had the time and talent to whip one up for Savannah. I guess she'll just be wearing a boring birthday shirt.

  16. awesome job on the shirt.

I'm STILL working on the blanket I've been knitting for Cooper since well before he was born. And um, Gavin, well, he may get his blanket some time before he leaves for college.

  17. You rock the b-day shirt! It's really super cute. Maybe you can help Karen catch up on her back orders?

  18. GREAT JOB! I'm so glad to be back because you keep me cracking up all the time.

I loved those cupcakes. But maybe for the stems, next time try chocolate coated pretzel sticks. They are stiff enough to withstand the weight (use an ice pick to poke holes in the candies to slide the stems into so you don't crush them) and the chocolate keeps them from getting mushy in the cake as long as you don't decorate hot cakes, of course!

It was fun catching up. I decided to post one mass comment here because this is the only post that had less than 30 already. I couldn't stand the the thought of it feeling left out! ;o) TTFN!
