A Temporary Change of Heart

Our driveway? Is full of more obstacles than an episode American Gladiator. The poor little Toddler couldn't walk into the house this evening because there was snow in her way. She stood and stared. And stared some more. And stared some more, in search of some way of getting around the vast chasm of doom.

When she realized that I really wasn't going to rescue her (since I was too busy photographing her misery), she wondered, what happens when a teensy little corner of your tennis shoe touches a itty bitty flake of snow?

I'll tell you what does not happen. The world does not end. Your shoe does not spontaneously combust. Glass shards do not become embedded in your eyeballs. Cockroaches do not crawl into your ears. Fire does not shoot out of your nose. Your pants do not fall off. Worms do not slither up your legs. Rabid rats do not gnaw on your knuckles. Snakes do not slither down your back. Ants do not take up residence in your diaper. Bacteria does not eat your flesh. Battery acid does not seep out of your tear ducts. You don't even fall over dead. Yesterday? Every single one of those things happened simultaneously when the Toddler was faced with the exact same dilemma. Today?

The screams didn't start until I had to drag her glove-refusing, hat-hating butt into the house before she froze her tootsies off.

I'm sure tomorrow she'll go back to fearing all things snow. Which is good, because I was hoping to use her snow phobia as an excuse to spend winters in Florida.

  2. BWAAHAHAHA. You have to come visit the frozen tundra where we have over 20 inches of snow and a tropical -10 weather pattern to match. I know. But you really shouldn't be jealous.

Go make a midget snowman while you can.

  3. heeeeyyyyyy....I can't see the last picture. :( It's like it wants to be there, but isn't.

But the other three a great pics! Kind of funny that she was terrified of the snow at all.

Also, wouldn't she like her pants falling down, you know, since she's kinda into the whole Naked Time thing? :)

    Sorry for the panic.

  5. That is the cutest snow bunny dance EVER. Now she'll be sneaking outside sans coat, with boots slipped on, just to dance in the fun white stuff. Ask me how I know this. Go ahead. Ask.

No snow here at my place. But I don't think I'm complaining because I hate cold weathers. But the pics are cute and your description of the whole thing is funny!

Someone once told me that children are extra-terrestrials; as soon as you figure them out, they change.

  13. Did you buy her some snow gear, and even more importantly do you have a sled? Something tells me if she can be dragged around in it, she won't mind it at all!

  14. That's so cute. It's fun to watch them discover snow for the first time. Good thing you got it on video!

  15. So cute and so funny. Jonathan was the same way when we first let him walk on the sidewalk with snow along the sides. With him being a boy, though, he finally just slammed his foot in the snow and tried to shake it off his shoe later.

  16. My 2 yr. old has the same phobia and was tortured by our recent trip to CO. I can't blame his Texas blood, but PA? Yours is tortured for months!

  18. Too funny. I love that you are photographing her misery as she stands there! Priceless! Cause you've got to have photographic evidence for when she grows up and doesn't believe all these stories.

I could use a trip to Florida right about now...

I think you can come visit TEXAS for the winter! What a toots! And, I've been amazed at how she's living in the North Pole & can't do snow. FUN NY!

  26. LOL! She is adorable! The look on her face staring is too cute :)

We have the opposite problem as mine has no fear of anything snow....it's amazing the tiny crevices that snow can seep into on a toddler :(

  27. You are lucky, my 2 yo hates snow. She was OK when she was 1 1/2, but at 2 1/2 she decided she hates it. Makes it tough when you want to take her out for sledding or any other winter activity. We try to force the issue, she just stands there, frozen in her stance, crying. Yeah, we also take lots of pictures, then we finally give in and pick her up.

I wish Cooper had a healthy fear of snow . . . we cannot open the garage without a firm grip on him because he bolts and does a swan dive into it - regardless of what he is wearing.

    She is such a doll!

Mine will FINALLY wear a hat, but he wasn't so much into it up in Canada, when it was below freezing the whole time. But mittens, don't speak of such evil around his tender ears, EVER.

    She's still adorable though!

  30. Hahahaha!! Okay, a) my daughter has those jeans...Old Navy? and b) my daughter had the same reaction (that would be reaction #1 - fear) to sand the first time we took her to the beach. So, I feel ya.

  31. How cute! I love the faces they make as they contemplate their fate. How cute that she enjoyed the snow and dancing around in it.

  32. Tootsie-The jeans are Gap. They're one of my proudest acquisitions as they cost a whopping $6 a year ago. I heart them so much I wish they came in my size.

She hates sand even more than she hates snow.

  33. That is too funny. We've gone through something similar with our dog, Ralph. He wasn't afraid of the snow in the front yard but the backyard snow was terrifying to him.

  34. Lol. So sweet. I hope she's this cautious around water for you! Maybe she thought she was going to fall in the snow?

too cute!! We've gotten the cold where I live lately, but no snow. :(

  36. Love the dance! I'm with Karen. She'll not only be out there without a coat, but in the buff doing adorable snow angels!

Happy has to put all his gear on before he goes out in the snow. Oh, no, he insists! He's the only toddler around with hat, gloves, coat, and boots on.
