An Open Letter to an Old Friend

Dear Snow,

Hi there! You know, we've been good friends for a long time. Remember when I lived in North Dakota how much I played with you? I know I was a kid, but I really did appreciate all your finer points. We went sledding together, we built forts and snowmen, I even used you to make the best snow angels of all time. We had so much fun together, Snow.

Even now, I'm pretty vocal about my love for you. I mean, you're so pretty! There are very few things in life that are as spectacular as an individual snowflake or a blanket of new fallen snow on the front lawn. A fresh coating of you all over the ground really brightens my day. That is, it brightens my day when the calendar says November, December, January, or February.

But you know what? It's March. MARCH. That means I'm done with you. At the stroke of midnight on February 29th I turned into a pumpkin. And this pumpkin can't stand the sight of you any more. March means Spring. Spring means cheerful daffodils and stunning tulips. It does not mean snow squalls and slush. So, go away. Now. I'll welcome you with open arms come November, but I don't want to see the likes of you around here any more. Goodbye, so long, GET LOST!

Thank you,
That Woman Who Only Likes You in the Winter

    Dear Snow,

I, too, am done with you. Take your white ass and your Winter season friend with you and beat feet. I'm tired of wrestling my kid into her car seat with a 32 pound jacket on. I'm tired of road grime and salt eating away the paint on my new Jeep. I'm tired of hearing the "beep beep beep" back-up alarms of the snowplows when they're plowing you up.

    Lump it already.

Dear S.O.B. (my nickname for snow)

I was so over you on December 26. In fact, do me a favor and don't show yourself again until December 24, 2008 and get your cold ass outa town two days later. If you don't, you'll have to answer to my family. I'm Italian, don't mess with me.

  3. Isn't March the worst month? It's so LONG and so COLD . . . but you want it to be spring and warm. And yet it isn't. 31 days of crappiness!

    March SUCKS!

  4. Can I add my name to this petition? I am done with snow and ready for spring...I need spring. Oh, and can we ask the Snow to take Sister Wind along when he leaves?

  5. Your snow has really overstayed its welcome.

  6. Yeah, I'm ready to kick out my unwanted visitor, too. We had 3 inches (that's what she said) on Thursday. Enough is enough already!!

Of course today it was 50 degrees so that helped melt a lot of it, not all but at least SOME!

  7. I'll just remind you of the open invitation to come visit Arizona whenever you want.

To clarify, thats YOU, Burgh. Not the damn snow. :)

  8. you DO know that spring doesn't really start for another 3 weeks, right?

*running away and hiding -- back to her warm climate where it doesn't snow*

  10. Do you have 10 foot snowbanks outside your window? Did you just get 12 more inches of the evil white stuff over the weekend?

If not, you have little to complain about.

Come to Maine or my white hell as I'm now calling it - it's unbelievable.

And more is coming this week!

  11. Maybe I pissed Spring off by calling her so early? Sorry about that. What cracks me up is that the Rita's Italian ICE, opened in my neighborhood on March 1st, and there was a line that brought their crazy selves through the 3 inches of snow to get there! Right now I'm wondering why I don't own one. Five months off in the winter, hire teenagers to do the dirty work, seems like a no brainer.

  12. Wait a minute. What the heck happened to global warming? Will somebody please call Al Gore and tell him he screwed up?

We've gotten about an inch of snow this winter, while 20 minutes north of here gets all our white stuff. Today? The snow is coming. I, for one, am excited. My children, raised in Orlando? Extremely pissed. You'd think the kids would be happy. But Nooooo.

Hear that? It's a mass exodus to the South ...

  13. Oh I know. I am SO done with it.

But did you live in the burgh in March 1993? If so, (even if you didn't) I am sure you will remember the Noreaster that hit on St. Patrick's Day weekend? 24 inches of snow? It was crazy. Of course, I was single, having fun and somehow me and my friends made it to Market Square for the parade festivities.

  14. Amen, sister! I LOVE snow like only a true Northern could. But there's a time and place for everything. And snow? It's time to go!

  15. Come on down to DC. I haven't seen snow in way too long. I missed it all winter. Meanwhile, all you folks in Chicago, Pittsburgh, New York, have been hogging all the snow. :(

My hyacinths (or are they hydrangeas??? can't remember...) are starting to come up. Of course my Glories of the Snow never came up since we never really got any good snow or stayed very cold...

  16. I like snow, too, but only when we get tons of it and everything shuts down (as in - I don't have to go to work), but we just keep having these nuisance snows.

And as for March, let's not forget the year we got over 2 feet on St. Patrick's day.

  19. Dear Snow,
We barely saw you this year and that's too bad. However, your buddy Ice spent entirely too much time visiting. We want you to know he's always the undesireable guest and we wish you wouldn't bring him with you. He never wants to leave.

I can't believe you are going to be warmer than us today. How is that possible? And, why are WE getting flurries in March? The only bright side is I doubt it will stick.

  22. I was here for the great storm of '93, but I don't remember why. I'm going to have to work on that. It's like a portion of my brain has been removed, leaving only vague memories of having to stay at a hotel because no one could pick me up from the airport.

  33. I hear ya. I am very sick of winter. I can't wait for pretty flowers. I am especially excited about t-shirts and flip flops. Unfortunately, Chicago has been known to have snow the first week of April. I hope you didn't piss snow off too much and he wants to stick around till then :)
