Signs of Spring

The daffodils have made an appearance,

as have the tulips.

Even the hyacinths are poking their little heads out.

The Pussy Willows are looking boo-tee-us. (Quit snickering, Mr. Husband.) (Mr. Husband can't talk about or hear about Pussy Willows without giggling like a 14-year old boy.)

The surest sign that Spring is just around the corner? The mother (&$#^*(% ants have invaded our house AGAIN, like they do every.single.year.

But don't worry, I am ready to fight this war. I learned from my errors last year and went straight for the good stuff. And lots of it.

Anything that promises to kill "crazy ants" should do the trick. After all, the dumb little things must be crazy if they think they can come into my house. (Are these scientific names? Who the heck came up with them?)

I wonder if it works on crazy aunts, too?

  1. Well colour me JEALOUS!!! We still have AT LEAST a foot of snow on the ground, and 3 or 4 feet in some places!

    Send warm vibes, would'ja?

Otherwise I'm coming to camp in your backyard till the snow melts here!

Yay for daffodils! I'm surprised they're so much farther behind ours. I'm in Western Maryland and ours are blooming! (nah nah)

  4. I love me some signs of spring! Lookin' good around your 'hood, girl.

I never read the fine print on ant bait before. You've gotta be kidding! Sounds like something I'd write. Maybe I've found me a new business.

Mr. Hubby sounds like my Pup. MEN. Maybe we should consider VT?

And, how funny that we have ant issues, too. Orkin needs to get here & kill the nasty boogers.

Yay for spring! We have lots of buds and blooms here, and every time I see them, I smile.

Also, let me know if you discover whether that stuff works on crazy aunts -- if so, I need it!

  8. Are silverfish a sign of spring, too. I keep finding those nasty buggers all over the house! Ants are irritating, but silverfish are just plain gross!

  10. Love the flowers and such, they just don't love me back, allergies, grrr! I get ants every year, too, and haven't been able to figure out where the heck they're coming from. If you find something that actually works, please share! I think mine must be related to yours, they really are crazy little buggers! I smash them with a tissue, my hand, a shoe, you name it, and the stupid things keep moving, creepy!

  11. Hate ants! They were living under our wood floor for a while. Hopefully we killed all the suckers FINALLY!

  12. Ants are so nasty. We have a bug guy who's been coming once a month since forever and we thought maybe we didn't need him anymore. So we told him to stop coming. Then the ants came. And brought everyone they knew and we called him back. Hate bugs!

But the signs of spring? SO awesome!
The snow is finally melting up here so I will soon be scouring the muddy swamp of my land looking for a little green. I can't wait to see the flowers!!! I am so done with this winter thing.

  16. uGH Ants!
We finally got rid of ours by having giant costco sized bags of Ortho bug killer pop open in the crawlspace under our house.

I saw my the first ant of the season Monday morning and I? Was none too impressed. I'm pretty sure I spent my weight in ant killing products Monday night.

  19. Okay I am with Mr. Husband, I can't say pussy willows either. I call them fuzz balls.
As for the ants. Being a southern girl we deal with the little assholes all the time. (the seem to like dampness)
Anyways, grants kills ants is the best thing. Also put the sticks out around your house.
    Good luck!

I'm still chuckling about "pussy willows"....

GAH!!! Can I go granola on you for a minute? All those products are really, really bad to use around kids and pets, they're cancer-causing nasty things. And they're really bad for the environment too...

You can mix molasses and water and that gets rid of them. It's what we did the summer I was pregnant with Little Man. Worked great. I found the recipe online.

I know it sounds out there, but try it. That other stuff is so bad for everyone in your house, not just the ants.

"Ghost ants"- Can you see them?

  28. The first signs of spring are gorgeous. Except for the damn ants...I could do without the ants. What is their purpose anyway?

  29. ooh! ooh! pick me! I know the answer, Alex!

We use the Bayer Advanced Home Pest Control when we first moved in our house 3 years ago and were completely inundated by ants (and not even in the kitchen...started on the opposite side of the house!!...damn dirty former-owner!). Anywhoo, for $9 for GALLON I sprayed the outside perimeter of my house, then sprayed the baseboards of the affected rooms. 1 time. Ants were GONE! Have not come back! Just to be sure, we sprayed again the following spring (hello...12 months later!), but only on the outside of the house. I've seen nary an ant since I did the spray 3 years ago. Last summer, I completely forgot to spray the outside of the house and only got a few crickets when fall started...but no ants, no spiders, no other-things-I-can't-identify.
I also used that spray to mist my deck to keep the chiggers from attacking us while we were out on the deck.
So far that $9 gallon is only about half-way gone. Way cheaper than Orkin. ;)
Also, we made sure to use cedar mulch in the yard since cedar is a natural bug repellant...plus it smells kinda nice. :)
And I'm with Sandy...when I saw Acrobat Ants, I thought of "Bugs Life".

The signs of spring are in abundance down here, and I'm loving it! The ants: don't love them so much, though!

  31. We're partial to the ant baits - although, we put them in the garage or outside, because we realized they were luring the ants inside if we placed them in the house. They seem to work...

We noticed very small ants in our new house as soon as we moved in, mind you it was January! Our ants must be crazy too - because I didn't realize you could get them in the dead of winter!

  32. You are stocked up and ready for a battle! Those ants won't know what hit them....or aunts!

    ReplyDelete
  33. The only sign of spring here is the ants. Thanks for showing me the bright side of them:)

  37. My house is built on an anthill I swear but here, where the weather is warm all year 'round... yep I have ants all #$%^bleeping year 'round.

Came by via my daughter - Choosing my own's blog. I have been lurking now and then. Thought it was time to introduce myself properly :-)

  38. I swear your Mr.Husband sounds just like mine.

And man, those ARE some big ass ants!

  39. That ant is creepy! To answer your question, I think the answer is yes! Love the ant names, now I'm gonna have to study up on those...In Chile we used a powder called Tanax, which was supposed to be super lethal to humans too but it never made anyone sick that I ever met.

  40. jealous of the flowers, but if they come with ants keep them over there! eeeewwwww!

  41. Yeah for Spring! Boo for ants!!

This will be the second spring in our current house. I'm really hoping the ants we had last year were a fluke and not a recurring sign of Spring. It they come back, I'm going to be contacting you for your expertise.

BTW, I can't read the backstory to the ants. I freaked out when you started talking about them pouring out of the walls. Ick! skin crawling... must change topic... on to look for cute Alexis pics for distraction...

  42. TERRO is the BEST STUFF EVER!! I have a serious ant infestation every year and they are the best of the best.
