When You're Right, You're Right. And I Am.

I have a reputation around this house for always being right.

Because I am.

But it's not like I actually ENJOY being right all the time. I really don't. For example, when I tell Mr. Husband that putting a bowl of water out in the bedroom for the dogs will result in obnoxiously loud Bulldog guzzling that will keep me awake longer than necessary, I want to be wrong. And then along comes the obnoxiously loud Bulldog guzzling and I have to remind Mr. Husband that I was correct by nagging him for the ten minutes it takes for the Bully to quit guzzling so loudly that people in Kansas can hear it. If he would just remember that I'm always right, we could avoid the whole stupid ordeal every night.

When it comes to matters of Toddler safety, I would REALLY prefer to be wrong. I know, I know, Mom is always right. But c'mon, just once, JUST ONCE, I would like to be able to say, "Alexis, please hold the rail and walk down the stairs carefully," without the Toddler immediately following my statement by falling down the stairs. Seriously. It has happened EXACTLY that way more times than I can count. Just the other day, she was walking down without holding the rail and I was behind her. I fussed at her, she made it one more stair, then fell.

I want to be wrong about these things.

Two good things came out of the latest stair falling stint. For one, she was completely uninjured. Scared, but there wasn't a mark on her anywhere. So, I got to be right without there being a negative consequence. The other good thing was that she is currently compensating for her clutzy ways by sliding down the stairs on her butt, which makes me far less nervous, and is pausing at the top to yell, "I BE CAREFUL ON THE STAIRS!"

Thanks, kid. I'll be sure to be waiting at the bottom so I can catch you when you fall.

  1. Kansas called. They beseech you to take the water bowl out of your bedroom.

  2. They say they'll never learn until they screw it up themselves..... Reminder to self, must. hold. tongue. more.

  3. Isaac fell down the stairs and out of trees and into the pool several times before she finally learned. And even then, she still turfs it a lot being a spaz.

Evie is more cautious. You should see her backing her little bum down a two inch lift in the sidewalk.

I LOVE LOVE that picture of Alexis. It just captures her!!

  4. Sliding down the stairs on your butt is good. Wait till she realises it's even better when in a sleeping bag or on top of a duvet - sleigh style!

Oh dear Lord, the Bully guzzling water. How I HATED that. HATED it. Loved the dog, hated the guzzling. And the snorting that would follow.

Stairs freak me out. Morgan IS good about holding on and going carefully, but still. She's 2 1/2-she's boundto NOT go slow one of these days.

  7. It's tough always being right, isn't it?!

Watching your child navigate the stairs is hard, but wait until she gets outside with her friends. I think sometimes I'm going to bite my tongue right off while trying not to scream, "slow down! don't trip! stay farther away from so and so! don't show me that stick by practically shoving it in my eye!"

(Fortunately, I'm often wrong in these cases and have learned just not to watch. Much easier on all of us!)

  8. Isn't it hard being perfect all the time? ;-)

  9. Yeah it does suck being right ALL the time. I hate it when I tell the kid not to do something or that he may fall/get run over etc.
But he NEVER listens. Last night he fell off the exercise bike and got a NASTY cut.
Which he has shown to EVERYONE. Now he has not been run over yet. But he had best listen!!!

    I feel your pain.

  11. Thankfully Micah uses the butt-slide and I rarely have to worry. But the bad thing is that he throws his toys down ahead of him so that he isn't hindered. We have marks on the walls to prove this.

  12. When we'll they realize the job of "Mom" comes with the mantle of infallibility?

As for bully guzzling...ugh. It didn't take Hubby long to figure out that was a bad idea. Two longhaired dogs and wall-to-wall carpet.

  13. We have 3 very loud bull dog breeds living in our house. And go figure, they always decide to drink once I get in the bed! And the cat never eats until my head hits the pillow! I just love critters. *sigh*

  14. i completely know what you mean though. It's a triumphant and sickening moment when you give a negative warning and the event you feared would happen.

  15. I am loving the crazy slide hair!

And personally? I would rather be right than President.

Funny. I just came from Alexis' blog, and her post today is about the same topic, although her take is completely different. And I quote "I was going down the stairs, not a care in the world, when that freak of a woman planted the idea in my head that I was going to fall. She then proceeded to shove me lightly, just so that I'd fall enough. She then did some dance, fists pumping in the air, chanting 'I was right again, I was right again!' Only 5792 days until I get to move out."

    Love it!

  20. I live in Kansas, and I have been wondering what the hell that sound was! Tell your Mr. Husband I'm looking for him!!!

    It is tough...always being right...

  21. you know, I thought I heard some loud slurping the other night- tell Mr. Husband to move the bowl ;)

Glad A is at least warning you before she comes down the steps now.

  22. OMW, glad she wasn't hurt. the staircase in my house is the bane of my life!

  23. Oh the stairs...Can you say "constant worry"! Happy she has no scratches:)

  24. I guess sometimes they NEED to fall . . .

and you just need to be there to "catch" them . . .

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yep, sometimes it's a pain being the voice of reason. That is funny that she yells that she is being careful now. Lesson learned, I guess.

  26. Glad she wasn't hurt. I remember Gavin's first tumble down the stairs...thankfully it was just the few steps from the house into the garage. But he literally walked off the edge of that top stair like he could pull a Wiley Coyote and walk on air. He then tipped over head-first (cuz his noggin is ginormous) and hit the step with his head, which propelled his feet upwards and around. In the span of three steps he went head over heels and landed on his back on the garage floor. He was mad, scared, and had a small bruise on his head, but otherwise unhurt. We laugh about it now because he looked like a cartoon.

And I love the pic...the static hair is hilarious and I swear I had a similar shirt growing up. :)

  27. I hate it when they are running around the house having a good time and then they get hurt. I TRY to tell them to slow down, but will they listen? NOOOOOO. Can't help but say, "Told ya so." I'm glad she wasn't hurt. It would be a shame to mess up that cute little face of hers.

  28. Yeah, always being right is a bit of curse. I feel you on that. When I tell extended family not to touch Alex because he wont like it and then they do and he starts crying? Well, I warned them.

Alexis' hair is great in that photo.

  32. Glad she is okay! I love that she yells that at each stair now. Too cute.

But why don't they listen? We know we are right. They will learn that we are always right eventually, won't they?

As for dog slurping at night, that drives me crazy too. Do they have to be so loud?
