At Least Dora Is Nowhere to be Found

For the first time ever, I am finding myself having trouble locating suitable clothes for the Toddler. There is the minor issue that she seems to think she has a say in what she wears, which is not entirely correct since she basically gets her choice of two items carefully pre-screened by the Momma Who Hates the Latina Whore. However, the major issue is that I refuse to pay full price for anything. I usually buy the kid's clothes a full season in advance, or more. Right now I'm mostly buying things for next summer because that would be the stuff that is buried on the clearance rack at the Gap Outlet. ($5 sundress for the win!) I was absolutely successful in my quest to purchase quite a few Fall pieces months ago, but that was all before a certain short person decided that her precious little legs were too hawt for pants. She wants to show a little leg, dangnabit, and I had best play along.

The net result of me not being adequately prepared for Fall with an extensive collection of appropriately weighted dresses, and being too cheap to buy the stuff that is in stores now, is that the kid is severely lacking in attire options. I long ago packed up the most summery of her summery dresses because I couldn't continue to have the morning conversation that involved me telling her she was going to be cold, her tell me she didn't want to be cold, me suggesting she wear pants, her suggesting I go to hell, then us repeating the whole freaking conversation all over again. And again. And again.

So it was like Mother Nature herself opened up the skies, pointed the warm sun down on me, and forced the angels to sing the hallelujah chorus when Indian Summer hit last week. It is a BEAUTIFUL thing to have a brief respite from fight, fight, fight, bicker, bicker, bicker. And fight. The kid can wear the few sundresses I kept accessible and we are both so very happy.

The kid was especially happy this morning when I pulled out The Dress. The Dress that she loved more than any other dress this summer. It's The Dress that can stand up all by itself because she has worn it approximately 847 times in the past three months. Without actually getting it washed in between wearings. Because that would require someone prying it off her cold, dead body. And we really didn't want to take things quite that far.

Ahhh, The Dress. I'm glad you were able to get one last hurrah, but now I'll be escorting you to the door. Or the trash. I would actually burn you in effigy, but I'm concerned that a summer's worth of constant wearing has left you a bit more combustible than I can handle.

(Don't even tell me she could keep wearing that awful thing if I just slapped a sweatshirt or sweater over it and invested in some matching leggings because NOOOOOOOOOO! That dress is going to die a painful death. Now.)

  1. but it's so cute! *s* one of my preschoolers has worn pants exactly once in two years and only then because I named it jeans day on the calendar. I'm surprised she didn't just bring them in her backpack instead. All winter long in the freezing cold, those bare legs are showin'. How about thick tights...leg warmers maybe? Good luck.

  2. There should be a new dress showing up tomorrow (I'm a little miffed it didn't show on Saturday - postal workers!). It's perfect for layering. :)

  5. I feel your pain! I have a dresser full of adorable pants and fall tops for the girl, but I know they will rarely see the light of day. Instead she will insist on wearing the same three dresses every. single. day. sigh.

  9. I don't think you should burn the dress. You should save it for the next one:) (Little girl, that is).

  10. I was surprised at how early in life girls start thinking they can decide what to wear. I remember my oldest daughter shaking her head NO to a dress at the store when she was about one year old.

  11. At least it's cute. But I totally get sick of seeing the kids in the same clothes. And I hate character tees. My daughter is 6 and couldn't give a rat's behind about what I put on her. My son is not even 2 and there is a lot of talking about what he wears. Who would have thunk it?

  12. Thankful yet again that Sumo is male and won't give a flying rat's arse about his clothes. I HATE character clothes with a passion.

Oh - and I LOVE little girl leggings. I think they're so cute. But I'd get her a new dress *snort* and chuck that mofo!

  15. It is a cute dress, but I can see how every single day could drive you nuts.

Even the boys do that. Or else they're just refusing to change clothes...

  18. My daughters fell in love with a pink polka dot dress too--I hated it back then but now I have it saved in my hope chest. She is cute, ya gotta admit that :)

It IS a cute dress and you COULD put a long sleeve T underneath with leggings to match OR heavy tights.

But, you said not to tell you that so, uh....

    Happy Tuesday?

  24. Found your page thru One Woman Show. I'm orginally from outside the 'burg area.

I have 2 boys and let me tell you..they are the same way. I'm so glad that a certain Star Wars shirt will NOT fit for very much longer. If he could he would wear it EVERY day! lol

Aw, but its a cute little dress! ;) Maybe you could check out some thrift stores, like Good Will... or sometimes they have specialty thrift stores with just kids' stuff. The kids' clothes I've gotten at Goodwill are in really good shape, probably cause they weed out the stuff that is ripped or stained and use it for scrap fabric instead!

  26. It had better *disappear* totally--if it can be found, even by archeologists in the next century, she will find it again...and demand to wear it, even if you have to grease her entire body and yours with crisco.

Trust me. The going far far away party needs to be done while she's in another country.

  29. The people who told you to slap a turtle neck under The Dress make me laugh...HOWEVER, you really could...

  32. I swear all kids go through this phase. Unfortunately, since I am home with my kids all day, and there are many days we don't really go anywhere, it is hard to enforce the "you can't wear this!" rule. I mean, really, who cares.

Kallie is going through a great phase right now where she will wear one of two different sundresses. If she can't wear those, she wears only her undies. Today, we didn't look for the sundresses so you can imagine what she is wearing now. Yup, Ariel undies and a smile.

Christina went through the phase at 3 when she would only wear princess dresses.

I swear, I don't know why I bother to actually buy clothes for them at this age. I am not kidding when I tell you how much money I have wasted. Sick.

Luckily, they grow out of it. I hope.....

  33. Heh. It is a cute dress. But I can see how you can get tired of it. I did have to giggle because she's wearing it in your current header, too.
