It was just another Wednesday afternoon. Alexis and I were in the car, cruising down the road on our way home after dance class. As the rain fell gently on the windshield, my mind was full of thoughts Children Gone Wild Without Supervision. Alexis sat peacefully in the back seat loudly singing whatever song it was that she was singing. We were lost in our own little worlds when suddenly Alexis called out, "Yellow car!"
She was right--a yellow car was parked in the lot on our right.
It's a game we've played for ages. We compete to see who can spot yellow cars first. Except, "compete" isn't so much the right word for it as I long ago conceded defeat. It seems that a toddler brain is well-equipped for scouring the earth in search of sunny vehicles. An adult brain is too busy focusing on road hazards, speed limits, and rain drops.
"Yup, you beat me!" I told Alexis.
"YELLOW CAR!" she yelled. She had spotted another one, this time on our left.
That's when I noticed it.
Yellow.
Not Lellow.
Yellow. With a "Y."
*sniff, sniff*
Our little girl is growing up.
Sort of.

aw! *sniffle* I just said to Dan the other day that I hope Maggie never figures out how to say 'toothpaste'. 'Poop-paste' is just SO much better. We totally call it that now.
ReplyDeleteI was destroyed when my niece figured out yellow instead of lellow. It was like all of a sudden to. No warning!
ReplyDeleteSigh. Kids.
After looking at that picture, I would say you've got time.....
ReplyDeleteI caught it the first type. I'm sniffing, too. Who gave her permission to grow up?
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh I love that picture!
ReplyDeleteI caught it first type, too. *sigh* And I was sniffling till I saw the picture. Bwahaha! You made her a tutu collar? Too much!
ReplyDeleteMine says "pickle," right, now. No more "biddle." *sniff*
ReplyDeleteIt'll always be "lello" to me . . .
ReplyDeleteThat would normally make me sad. Except I'm way too sad tonight over the picture I'll be posting tomorrow to be sad for you.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm a horrible tease.
My youngest birthed-and-taught-to-talk baby will be 27 in April. Most of the time at our house it is still lellow. There are lots of other words that have just stuck, too. Sometimes their words remain part of your vocabulary long after they've outgrown 'em. I figure if they make your heart smile, why not! ;o)
ReplyDeletelordy, please get that pic printed and framed... it's double duty so spectacular as a toddler and also embarrassing when she's older!! yay!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering why you wrote "yellow" instead of 'lellow"... Sad, yes but awesome. Trust me, trips to the speech therapist leave much to be desired!
ReplyDeletewe still have certain z-man words in our family lexicon ... time a go. ridiclious. pastaghetti. move a butt.
ReplyDeleteall the classy stuff.
Already?! That is actually quite impressive. The little girl I watch is 3 1/2 and still says Lello. How does she say "Elephant"?
ReplyDeletePriceless picture.
first of all, LOVE the picture! Glad to see she is still wearing the tutu!
ReplyDeleteKids just grow way too fast. Read the book "Let Me Love you Longer" by Karen Kingsbury. It is a picture book and will make you teary eyed when you read it, but so worth it!
My daughter still doesn't say her "r" sounds and I know one day she will and I will miss the days when she said "cah" instead of "car".
Awwww....I love that pic :)
ReplyDeleteAwwww. I love the mis-pronounciations (I probably totally screwed up that spelling) and I miss them so much when they are gone.
ReplyDeleteIf you come down to visit, mine still says lellow... at least for now...
Awwwww.... now you're going to make ME cry! We still go around, 20+ years later, using words my daughter made up. I think the game will always be Lellow Car to you....D
ReplyDeleteToddler speak is the best. I always feeljust a little sad too when one of those fun baby words grows up.
ReplyDeleteGreat picture. How many days is it on the tutu anyway?

ReplyDeleteAh, but just think: a few years from now, when you insist on spending a day telling her about "lellow cars" she'll be all mortified (and how delighted you'll feel when you discover she does NOT need to be a teenager for this!)
ReplyDeleteMr & I recently got told to JUST STOP IT when we drove past the creek and said, "Ducks smim in crick"
My first thought was to say LELLOW HAT!
ReplyDeleteMy youngest could never say itchy, he would say Hitchy.
For years we scratched because we were hitchy.
20 years later my older son started his own little company and named it "Hitchy Corp."
