Oh, the Hiding We Will Do

It is one of those milestones I have been eagerly awaiting--one that will allow me to simultaneously be a Kick-Ass Awesome Parent and a Slacker Parent Who Gets Things Done. It is a milestone that I know will lead to fabulous things.

Hide-n-Seek.

I was tipped off that Alexis might just be old enough for the Greatest Game Ever at dance/gymnastics. It was the midpoint of the semester, so all us lovely parents were invited into the gym for the last portion of the class. The fun and games cultivated with a quick round of hide-n-seek. While Alexis failed miserably during the round where she was supposed to find me, she succeeded gloriously at joining her cohorts in hiding. The very moment I realized that she was staying on the bottom of the pile of Preschoolers without even a peek, I knew . . .

. . . I knew there was a chance that I could tell her to hide while I counted, but not go looking for her for several minutes.

You can chide me all you want, award me all the horrible mother awards you want, and give me all the dirty looks you want. I was excited. The potential of even just five minutes without a short person hanging on me were nothing short of a dream come true.

So, tonight the games commenced. As expected, Alexis SUCKED at hiding. Unless, of course, you consider sitting on her bed giggling louder than a freight train to be optimal hide-age. It was OK, though, because I managed to yell up to her, "Where's Alexis?" every thirty seconds for a full two minutes before she started to worry that I wouldn't find her.

With some planning and practice, I should be able to figure out how to do nothing clean the house very well in two minute chunks.

It's going to be GREAT.

  2. Heeee heeee! I used to play that game with Gracie. It got to where I could go a full ten mintutes before she showed herself from behind the couch or under the bed. And those ten minutes were BLISS. I am so there when Evie is old enough!

  3. We've been playing Hide-n-seek for a while and he cracks me up! He does not get the concept of hiding, as soon as he hears you coming, he jumps out and says "find you!"

  4. Cecily is right - you can stretch those two minutes out longer and longer until you have very large chunks to time on your hands. Ten minutes is a very large chunk, you know.

  5. I do that when I am reading and she wants my attention. I'll read a page or two then go find her.

  6. Hey take those minutes any way you can get them.
Myself, I went back to graduate school. It was before cell phones and the internet. So I was really cut off from everyone.
Why I went when I had two small children?
Three hours a week. All to myself. Didn't have to talk. I could sit in a chair and not get up for THREE WHOLE HOURS. It was quiet.
I don't even remember how I got all the work done. I'm guessing I did it after they had gone to bed.
But I lived for Tuesday nights 6-9!
Never used the education since I was a stay at home mom. But it was worth every dime.

Have you played lets see who can not talk for the longest yet?

  7. I can easily do this with the almost-6 year old, but the almost-4 year old is TERRIBLE at hiding. Oh well, I guess I have another year. She's just too much of a chatter box!

  11. Haha ... here's one I discovered yesterday. The McDonald's in our town has WiFi! If everyone already knew this I apologize, but I was completely amazed. I was trying to work and my daughter was bouncing off the walls. I brought her down to McDonald's, bought her a chicken nuggets happy meal (and rationalized it by forcing her to get apple slices and milk instead of french fries and Sprite), and logged into the McDonald's WiFi. It cost me $3 (plus a happy meal) for 2 hours but was totally worth it. After lunch we moved into the playground area where she ran around with other kids while I got in 2 hours of work! I see a lot of happy meals in our future!! (Alright, I usually try to avoid McDonald's food as much as possible - do you think they would let us use the play area if we just went in and bought a milk?)

    Once again? Twins...

And does Alexis hide in the same. spot. every. time?

Because the first time I played with Little Man, I hid behind one of the dining room chairs with Tiny Man in my arms. The damn dog gave me away by standing there staring at me with this 'why the hell are you crouching awkwardly with the young human?' look on his face.

Anyway, the point is, that now? Little Man hides in that spot. Every. Single. Time.

It's called creativity, child. Try to freaking use it once in a while.

  22. i have another hide and seek secret for you...
you hide. pick a hiding place as difficult as possible. make sure it's a comfortable one. then let her call out "ready or not", and relax while she hunts.

it's my favorite way to catch a nap... LOL
