How to Make a Scene at the Grocery Store

It turns out that when you decide to make an offer on a house (we are now under contract, btw), you should do it after payday, not two weeks before it (it's so awesome getting paid once per month). Not waiting until there is actually money in your checking account means you will have to suffer without the luxuries in life. Like food.

When I glanced at Cody yesterday and realized he looked kind of tasty, I decided we really just needed to cave in and make a run to the grocery store. Alexis lurves to shop for groceries these days, mostly because she likes to plot out our meals for the week. In her world we eat pasta, pasta, pizza, pasta, peanut butter and jelly, and pasta. Of course, I took her along so she could drive me nuts asking me to buy every kind of pasta under the sun.

The short person needed some things to take to school for lunch this week, so in between pasta battles we headed over to the canned vegetables section to grab a little something special. As we walked down the aisle, I asked the magical question, "Alexis, do you want Lima beans or garbanzo beans?"

"Both," she replied.

"You can only have one. Lima beans or garbanzo beans."

"Ummmm . . . Those ones," She replied, as she pointed to a can of garbanzo beans.

As I reached over to grab them, suddenly Alexis started whining. "No! I want Lima beans, too!" she wailed.

"You said you want garbanzo beans," I said. I don't know why. It's not like she cared about what she said two seconds earlier.

"I WANT LIMA BEANS!" she screamed, as tears ran down her face.

"No, you're not getting Lima beans," I countered.

Right about then I noticed the little old man who was listening in on the really fun conversation. The look on his face pointed out the obvious: that was a really odd conversation to have with a 3-year old.

She won and got both the Lima beans and garbanzo beans. Sometimes principal is just plain stupid, like when the alien being you call your kid makes a scene in the grocery store because she wants Lima beans.

  1. She can have my share of both lima and garbanzo beans! YUCK! I'm a bad bad mom so my kids have never tried either! She can have theirs too!

  2. Dude. The kid likes lima beans. I LOVE that!

I have stupid arguments with my kids too...and it usually takes an old man staring at me to figure out I'm being an idiot. Or the kid I'm arguing with...it's kind of annoying that they're smarter than I am. :)

  4. Succotash. You've gotta introduce her to that concoction. She'd love it.

  6. Arguing over two types of beans is about the best type of grocery store dispute you can have with a small child. :)

  7. With my kids, it's fresh fruit. I have actually held a bunch of bananas over their heads (no, not literally) to make them behave the entire time. Course, that means I have to fight the tide all the way back to fresh produce at the end of the trip. Funtimes.

  8. you really do have a little woman on your hands there. I'm kinda with Janet. Seriously though when you start them off on the right foot food wise, they actually LIKE healthy things! We eat healthy here too but I can say honestly that mine have never cried for lima beans *L* Cute story. I loved the little, old man *s*

  9. Um, I think I am just impressed that your kid knows what those 2 different bean types are. Mine would be like, "What?"

  10. I argue with my son over Fruit by the Foot or Gushers. NOT BOTH.

At least I have the ability to stand firm. You must be failing at parenting to give in to both.

  11. Yeah you're definitely doing something right b/c I've seen that argument in the store before but it was between Lucky Charms or Fruit Loops, not canned veggies!

  14. That is the greatest Grocery store war I have heard in a long time. My kids would go for the Garbanzo beans, but only because they love Hummus. They say that Lima beans tasts like chalk. Good for your little health nut!

  17. We did the same brilliant thing when we bought a house. Seriously, why don't realtors TELL YOU THESE THINGS?!

  18. @Sarah-SERIOUSLY. There should be a handout that says, "Don't even look at this house unless you have $2000 in your checking account right now, and kiss it goodbye." They could at least remind you that you can't touch your savings accounts for a while. GAH!

  19. I only had one job in which I got paid once a month and I remember how hard it was to plan accordingly, so my condolences! Alexis(and you) would just love to come to dinner at my in-laws - meat with a side of meat.

  21. My girls will not even discuss the possibility of Lima beans. I've tried. I love them.

Kudos to Alexis man, I think after all of that she deserves to have her limas and chick peas too!

So wait, both you AND Mr. hubby get paid once a month? How weird is that, and absolutely awful... Sweetie Pie gets paid only once a month, but I'm twice a month, so at least we have some kind of income for those last two weeks, which means our kid could have both lima beans and garbanzo beans should he ever fall on his head and decide to fight for those instead of M&M's.

I'm also a big fan of the garbanzo beans, by the way.

Oh, and sucky that you have to provide food for your kid at daycare. I refused to even consider a place that didn't provide food. It's hard enough for me to make lunches for Sweetie Pie and me a couple of times a week (the goal is always 5 days a week to save money, but just doesn't happen), if Little Man didn't get fed at school, I'd be the mom ordering him Pizza Hut every day...

  26. And here people thought my daughter was strange for not liking chocolate milk. I can't even imagine having that conversation about Lima beans with a three year old. (Hugs)Indigo

  27. Congrats on being under contract! That's so exciting!

I love the grocery store argument. Giving in to these two options was the right thing to do. And now I'm totally craving pasta and garbanzo beans. Not so much with the lima beans.

  28. I love to freak out the old people with my kids crazy food wants too. Nothing like making the produce guy do a double take by asking Mark if he feels like leeks this week. Love that.
