Three Overtimes a Cranky Toddler Makes

There are some sounds that you just don't want to hear in the middle of the night.

The crash of breaking glass.

Dogs barking on and on and on.

The phone ringing, most likely signaling some sort of emergency.

Then there are sounds that you just don't want to hear in the middle of the night as you are firmly parked on the couch, pooping bricks and having a heart attack as one of the most intense hockey games you have ever seen goes into overtime.

Toddler feet plopping across the floor above you.

A toddler crying.

A toddler yelling, "MOMMMY!"

The first time Alexis woke up all sorts of cranky, I abandoned my station in front of the Penguins game and managed to settle her back into bed after a drink of water and a few hugs. Miraculously, I didn't miss any goals.

The second time the Toddler woke up all sorts of cranky, I thought it was absolutely reasonable that Mr. Husband should take a turn. I had already missed the entire first period putting the Toddler to bed and part of overtime putting her back to bed.

Mr. Husband wasn't willing to miss a second. His answer for a crying toddler was to snatch her up and let Alexis hang out with us downstairs. And that would be how the Toddler managed to cuddle with me on the couch, watching the Penguins fight for a win like I've never seen a team fight for a win before. She saw at least two periods of overtime Stanley Cup Playoff hockey. (Keep in mind that I do have feet and could have escorted her back upstairs. I didn't want to miss another second either. Even if I was on the verge of a catastrophic heart attack from the stress of that game.)

Surprise, surprise, surprise, the result of a toddler hanging out with her parents while watching hockey in the middle of the night is a very, very sleepy toddler. The kid had absolutely no interest in getting up this morning.

None.

When she wouldn't wake up, I finally just started changing her into clothes while she continued to sleep. That Herculean effort was met with moans and groans and whining. Apparently, a certain little someone didn't like the whole Let's Wake Up Six Hours After the Game Ended Concept. Finally, after several minutes of muttering, "No!" and "Go away!" Alexis said something that pretty much summed up the whole thing:

"Stupid."

I'm not sure if she was calling me stupid, saying that it was stupid to be awake so early after that game, or both, but she was very much so correct in her assessment.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go get some sleep.

Goodbye!

  1. Out of the mouth of babes. They know more than we ever will.

And we missed the ending. I was sitting up watching it when Sam turned it off. He said he didn't want to see a loss after all that because he'd never be able to sleep. Oh, ye of little faith.

  2. And fast forward a few years and you'll hear that every morning before school.

Kids really do know best! Enjoy your sleep, tomorrow could be a long night again.

  4. I just talked to my friend tonight who went to that game, and she said it was "Awesome!!" - That's big, because she doesn't usually show much enthusiasum about anything. I am actually not stupid, and went to bed at a reasonable hour, and watched the ending tonight instead, but you know, to each his own.

Oh those upstairs sounds...I so know what you mean. And, I love that our husband's idea of helping out is to bring the kids downstairs with the adults. That's the same thing mine does, and it drives me up the ever-loving wall! Because, then they expect that it will be a recurring thing. Um, NO!

  6. LOL! I agree, you should have tucked her back in and called it a day!!

  7. Yup, I got the same problem with my guy over here too. BUT he's ten and cranky 'cause his Dad let him stay upn to watch the game. I just wish his Dad was here to get him up the next morning too.

Somehow Jaden ended up in our bed and stayed awake until midnight. I went to bed shortly thereafter and Jon being the hardcore fan that he is stayed awake. Jon and Jaden are very crabby today. Jon told me he yelled and celebrated but I was sound asleep. Jon did call a co-worker a wimp for falling asleep during the game. He's so hardcore.

I am starting to love Crosby's pornstash, even if he's like, 11 years younger than I.

  9. Guess who stayed up and watched the Wings get beat? Yup. Little J. Neither of us were willing to abandon the game. He dozed in and out while we went for a roller coaster ride.

I thought of you in those last 30 seconds. How could I be angry?

My e-mail box was full of e-mails from ticked off Detroiters. Whatev . . . Pens rocked at the right time.

    Next game . . .

  10. i thought of you when i heard about the game (didn't get a chance to watch this time), and i wondered if alexis got to see any.

    heh heh heh.....

  11. Personally? I'm holding Alexis directly responsible for the Wings going down.

And I'm totally ok with that. :)

  12. Once again, you had me checking ESPN's ticker...

Stupid is a cuss around here...and it sound like the perfect word for your morning.

I say stupid under my breath a lot.

Hopefully, this will not be the case tonight!! Here's to quick wins and sleep filled nights!!

    GO PENS!

Sleep is so over rated. ;)

  15. You don't even want to know what I do when there's an Orioles game on. lol

  16. I fell asleep before the game was over, but hubby told me all about it. I don't blame you for wanting to catch every minute. From what I saw in the third period (and in the last 30 seconds, no less), the Pens were fighting with everything they had. It paid off!

Of course, the hubs is a Red Wings fan, hailing from Detroit as he does, so he was hoping to see them win that night. I didn't really care. I'm a Caps fan and was crushed to see what happened with them, not even bringing in the veteran goalie (Kolzig) during their desperate moments. Stupid, indeed!

    Peace - D

I was thinking of you with that game on. Growing up near Detroit, but on the Canadian side, I have to say the Wings were my first team. With the Sens out, I'm quietly rooting for them. But I think either result will be good for the game.

  21. Succinct and to-the-point! The Toddler summed up in one simple word the EXACT way I felt this morning when the alarm went off. I admire her very much; tell her DANK YOU from me :).

    GOOD BYE! STUPID. (still)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah, that's pretty much the first word out of my mouth every morning too. Stupid alarm clock.

When I beat my 4 year old at hockey last week he called me stupid.

Get that kid some coffee stat! That ought to keep her awake for the next 10 years.

  24. The other day Yahoo (which is the only way I know anything ab the world) had a headline about the Pens and whoever else playing a championship game and I actually somewhat knew what it was talking about because of you!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes, waking up after six hours of sleep is the definition of "stupid." Your child is a genius!

    ReplyDelete
  26. My hubby does the same thing. "Oh just let him sit on the couch with us."
I think I said "this is stupid when I woke up this morning." Funny thing, after I said that the phone rang which means something is wrong at the babysitters. Sure enough they are all sick there so I couldn't send Thomas. Knowing very well that I wanted to be the one to stay home today, the husband called it before me. Before I could get off the phone he YELLS "I'm staying home!"
    pfftttt.....Stupid!

  27. That sounds JUUUUST like what happens to me during college basketball season. Some of those stupid games in the tourney don't start until really late .. . resulting in confused and exhausted adults the next day.

Don't you love dressing a sleeping child? My personal favorite is when Sumo falls asleep in the car on the way home and I try to put pajamas on the kid who looks like something out of "The Exorcist" when I try to remove the diaper. Good times!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have doen the dressing a sleeping child. It sucks.
But usually I just get the whining child in the morning who wanted to sleep in.
Um kid why don't you do that on the weekend? I feel your pain.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That was one awesome win! Now do it again!

  30. OK, I totally would have done the same thing and totally would have dealt with a very cranky toddler in the same way and totally -- if I wasn't working -- would have gone back to bed.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous1:22 PM

Husband was doing the same thing...three overtimes he kept screaming as he came to bed waking everyone else up.

And the overly tired crankiness....I feel for you.....it's rough...and you can't do anything about it until they go to bed the next night and pray they get over it.

    Congrats on the Pens btw.

  32. "Stupid" means "Good morning, Mommy - I love you!" - in Toddler Speak.

  33. This is when TiVo pause is a very good idea. Or just move to a town where playoff hockey means you are not playing in June...not that I am bitter or anything.

  34. Anonymous2:56 PM

Seems to me that it was awful insensitive of the Pens to play so late in the night. Do you need me to call Mario and tell him that he needs to end all games by 8 p.m. Burgh time from now on?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Let's hope tonight isn't as long or as nervewracking! I am cranky from staying up too late too! Thankfully Caleb slept through the whole thing, even the crazy people driving down the street honking their horn at 1am.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Now you know what to do if you ever want to sleep in ;)

  37. argh Maggie was up approximately eleventy-thousand times last night. And then this morning? I had to go wake her up for daycare. Little butt.

Don't you just love men's solutions to toddlers having trouble sleeping?!

At least you're getting her primed to be a true fan!

    ReplyDelete
  39. This is why I love me some Tivo. You can pause the game, take care of the kid, and go back to it and if you FF commercials and instant replays you don't tend to lose too much time.

Our solution to the no sleeping has been the toddler helmet. Fortunately, Sasha seems to prefer his Hubby's head.....:-)

  40. LOL! Stupid. That's a great kid.

  42. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Penguins!!!

    A little more MAGIC please!

    Go PENGUINS!

  43. We've had a few of those, "nobody wants to stop long enough to put the kids back to bed" moments. Where they end up cuddling on the couch with us. Stupid is the perfect word for it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. stupid penguins. wait. is that right?

  45. You can't do the crime without doing the time, ya know? She's of to a great spectator career!

  46. Anonymous9:45 AM

You need a DVR so you can pause the game until she's back in bed!

    ReplyDelete
  47. She and the Babe must have been on line talking; he didn't want to wake up either!

Why is it that Dads think bringing the kid to you is taking care of it? I think they may need gene therapy.

  49. LOL! stupid! one of my fave words.

    ReplyDelete
  50. we had a similar morning because Gavin came into our bed at 4am...less than 3 hours after I got to bed after that game, so when my mom came in to wake Gavin and I up at nearly 8am I'm pretty sure I muttered "stupid" as well.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Awww. I hope everyone got more sleep the next night! I have been known to say worse after only 6 hours of sleep. Hopefully my child won't pick up on those words. ;-)
