Baby Sisters R Us

Forever. That's how long Alexis has been best buds with "Abby." They have gone to the same daycare, been in the same class, and conspired to take over the world together forever. Forever and ever.

The two of them are like sisters. One minute they're hugging and squealing with joy at the very thought of being together. The next minute one of them is in time out while the other one stands across the room bawling and bloody after losing a fight. The love each other. They hate each other. They love each other.

For the most part, it's all fine and dandy. All the adults in their lives know that they have this wicked love-hate thing going on, and Abby's parents have a very similar parenting style to ours. So when Alexis comes home with a giant scratch on her face, I know it was Abby and I'm all "whatever" about it. Abby's parents do the same. Day in and day out, those two manage to make each other nuts, but yet they are good for one another.

They are best buds. Inseparable best buds.

Lately, however, I do believe Abby has become a bit of a bad influence. You see, Abby has a younger sister. I know for a fact that Abby's life at home with her baby sister is a lot like Abby's life at school with Alexis. They fight. A lot. Yet, Little Miss Abby seems to keep forgetting to mention the part where having a baby sister means sharing when you don't want to share, being ignored when you want attention, and generally having to deal with a smaller version of yourself. Instead, Abby apparently talks up the baby sister thing like it's the greatest thing on Earth. We're talking better than unicorns jumping over rainbows while puppies fall from the sky.

Alexis believes the lies.

And now Alexis is all about telling me how she needs a baby sister. Every. freakin'. day.

This morning as I was blow-drying my hair, Alexis started in on her usual attempts to lobby for a sister.

"Momma, I want a baby sister," she said.

"I know," I replied, just like the trained robot that I am.

"We should go to the store and buy one," she advised me.

"I'll think about that," I replied with a smile. If it were that easy? The kid might just get her way.

"We should go buy a baby sister with a stinky butt!" she clarified.

Abby may be upselling the baby sister thing, but at least she's being straight about the butt situation.

Thank you so, so, so much to everyone who has already helped to raise money for the March of Dimes in remembrance of Maddie and other preemies everywhere. Right now there are 21 incredible people scheduled to walk on our Pittsburgh team, and we've raised nearly $2800 total. With just 10 days left until the actual walk, I'm still $130 short of reaching my personal goal. If you have a buck or two you could spare, it sure would be appreciated!

  2. Uh Oh... I'm just gonna say this. I did the EXACT SAME THING Alexis is doing - I asked for a baby sister. And what did I get? A baby sister...

Not saying you should follow my parents lead or anything - at all. But I will say that I honestly was wondering how long it would be before she started asking you this... lol. (Sorry!!)

  3. the planet of janet is right though... it's taken me what... almost 28 years to finally think that my baby sister is kinda ok... and this is just in the past 2-3 years or so. :-)

  4. mark my words: you'll soon be competing with the Duggars for number of kids if your pet collection is any indication. *snort*

  5. I asked for a baby sister... and I got a baby brother. I then proceeded to tell everyone I knew that he was switched at birth and my sister was out there somewhere. No one seemed to believe me. LOL I DO however think that Alexis needs a baby sister! ;)

  6. Luckily Alex doesn't have stinky butt yet, but man oh man, does he fart! Luckily it's not stinky yet. I'm not looking forward to the day when he starts eating solid foods though...

  8. So what is Alexis going to do if, when you get to the shop, there are only baby brothers?

  9. I have a $20 check from one of my donors - that I left at work before the walk. I was going to mail it in, but I could mail it to you if you'd like. Or your March of Dimes Chapter with your name on it?

  10. Every time I think, "I want a second kid", the feeling magically disappears when I spend a day at my job (with 2 girls). Their relationship scares me.

  11. @jen--You ain't kidding. Every single day I walk into daycare and see dozens of little walking forms of birth control.

  12. Gee, as if you're probably not getting the already intrusive "when's the second?" from the rest of the known world, you've got your own kid up in it. LOL

You can borrow my baby for a while. Maybe she'll get over it real fast when she realizes half my day is spent making sure he doesn't eat something he's not supposed to. Charlotte's used to it because I had them so close in age, but I bet Alexis wouldn't find Stop The Baby From Choking as exciting a game.

P.S. I donated for the big walk for Maddie, but I donated a little for your personal goal. I wish it could be more. Stupid recession. Thanks for walking - you make me proud!

  13. I cannot believe that Mr. Husband (who magically gives that girl of his everything she's ever wanted - and Alexis, too) hasn't jumped on this bandwagon. If Alexis wants it, he must want it also.

  14. hm I was thinking that this post was going to perhaps be an announcement ;)

  15. So not looking forward to these kinds of questions should they ever arise.

  16. That is hilarious. I have the opposite situation at home. My daughter wants to remain the baby, and all babies need to stay away from our house.. Meaning she emphatically does NOT want a new baby brother or sister in the house, even though Hubby and I are hoping for one. :) Good Luck. Maybe she will eventually change your mind... siblings are awesome.

  17. I think she needs a baby sister. Look how good the first kid tuned out! You're good at this!

  18. I'm with the others who said it could be a Baby Brother. Alexis (and you and Mr. Husband) doesn't actually get to pick. We are having a Baby Brudda, but luckily mine is still to young to argue that she wants a sister, like my neice does with my own pregnant sister.

As for "We're talking better than unicorns jumping over rainbows while puppies fall from the sky" ... NOTHING COULD BE BETTER THAN THAT!!!

  19. feel free to have Alexis come spend, oh, 5 minutes in my house- she will no longer think that having a baby sibling is any fun. The crazy that is my life with 2 would surely make her run screaming back to momma demanding to never have a baby sister

  20. I fought off those questions for years...and now my brain is so mushy I can't remember how I did it.

I want rainbow jumping unicorns to come to my house. Can Abby let me in on the secret?

  21. Gotta love the kids for keeping it real. We are currently pregnant with #4. Our daughter wants a girl and our older son wants a boy... somebody is going to be ticked! ...warn Alexis she could get a brother and more than just their butts are stinky, she may want to rethink things.

  22. What Trinity said. Exactly what I thought. And if it wasn't, maybe it was! Uh oh! I see now why you accused me of being next, it was a ruse!!

  23. Well, you better just get on busy then. Alexis needs a sister...but what happens if she gets a brother? Hmmmm? :-)

  24. But, Mommy, why aren't you all over getting the child the baby sister of her dreams???
