Memories

"Where's Dorfy?" she asked.

"Dorfy?" I replied.

"Yeah, where did Dorfy go?" she repeated.

I thought for a moment, then said, "Do you mean Dorothy?"

"Yeah!" she clarified. "What happened to Dorfy?"

Dorthy died well over a year ago. She was a goldfish who lived in a little tiny Sesame Street aquarium on our kitchen counter. We never mentioned that Dorothy was leaving. She just disappeared one day, aquarium and all.

We were driving down the road, windows open, when Alexis asked, "Where is Baby Shell's Dora sock?"

I knew right away what she was talking about--the Dora sock she lost out the open car window as we were driving through Columbus several months ago.

"It's in Ohio," I replied.

"Can we go get it?" she asked.

"No," I replied. "It's to far away."

"Oh," she said. "Can we go buy another blue Dora sock?" she continued.

"I want to wear the gray skirt," she said.

"You don't have a gray skirt," I said.

"Yes, I do! I want to wear the gray skirt with the pink shirt!" she insisted.

"Girl, you don't have a gray skirt that goes with a pink shirt," I replied.

"The pink shirt that sleeves are missing," she clarified, in her broken 3-year old English.

I thought for a moment and then realized the kid was referring to an outfit she outgrew last summer. It's been packed away since fall, if not longer.

I know Alexis can remember all this stuff because her brain isn't clogged with things like the periodic table of elements, the PLU for bananas, and the mortgage due date, BUT STILL. Where do I get me some of that magical memory potion, yo?

  2. I, too, would like to wear the gray skirt that I outgrew last year.

  3. Can I have some of that as well?

Isn't it weird what they remember? Seriously.

  4. That's a phenomenal memory. Do you think she can tell me where I left my other toe sock?

  5. What MsTeb said. I have no memory now tht I've had a child. It's really rather irritating.

  6. I love it because there isn't any chronological order to toddler memories. It might have been 10 minutes ago or a year.

  7. My day yesterday:
Remember you said we could make brownies on Sunday? Remember? Remember? When are we making brownies? Are we making brownies? Is it time to make brownies? Remember...brownies? remember? Is it time? now? Now? How about now? Remember?

  8. My daughter had an insane memory too. (Remember the Baby Jesus story?) The boys haven't done this as much as she did.

However, all three of my kids know where they are and how to get places by age two. That kills me, how a 22 or 24 month old will know instantly that I turned a different way, or will know what turn to take to a place they haven't even been in months.

  9. Isn't it crazy what they can come up with months and even years later and your like "WTH??"

I love how you told her the sock was in Columbus! HA!

  10. We tried looking for the sock. No go. Tell Alexis we're sorry.

Dude! That is my kids to a 'T'! I keep waiting for Cooper to tell me that he remembers the time he went down the slide while getting squeezed really tight and then it was really bright and cold. Given the amount of random crap he remembers and asks me about months and months later, it wouldn't even phase me.

  12. It's interesting...The Boy is very much like this (and he's 11). We have learned NOT to argue with him because 99% of the time, he's right! They're amazing.

We need the freaking memory juice just to remember the random things they remember and ask us about in code.

    It's like they're testing us.

Of course, when Little Man asks me about these random memories, he always says to me "you know, we did it/saw it yesterday."

For the record? I don't consider something that happened almost two years ago to have happened yesterday. Preschoolers: playing with the place/time continuum since the beginnig of mankind.

  14. Gracie is JUST LIKE THIS. Drives a mom insane.

Wanna know how to break her? Buy her a pack of post-it notes. Teach her how to write down things she wants to remember. Once she realizes she doesn't have to actually remember ANYTHING if she just writes it down...POOF! Any and all remaining ability to remember things will disappear faster than the last popsicle in the house on a hot summer day.

  16. oh man Maggie's been doing this to us lately. Just today she brought out her Elmo Live that Dan's parents got her for Christmas that she hasn't really played with in months to show to Dan's dad. Like, HERE PAP PAP! YOU GOT THIS FOR ME! LOOK HOW I PLAY WITH IT! Crazy. These kids, they are scary.

  17. Jonathan's memory absolutely astounds me...but yet, I know it will only get worse as his verbal skills increase.

  18. I want some too! It is funny that you posted this today, because Dylan did something tonight that shocked me. I'm going to try and get it on tape and post it.

P.S. How is the new house stuff coming along? What is the official date?

  19. My 4yo's memory just kills me. The things he remembers blow me away. I, on the other hand, can't remember when I ate for breakfast yesterday. Do you think it's possible that he usurped my memory in utero? Like an alien brain sucker or something? Yeah, I'm going to go with that.
