I Have a New Love

Back when we were furnishing out teeny tiny townhouse, many decisions were made for us. For example, we had itty bitty end tables in the living room because the couch plus the two itty bitty end tables barelyfit in the available space. Anything bigger would have been useless.

The same situation existed in the master bedroom. We had exactly enough space for two nightstands and a queen-sized bed. You couldn't even slide a piece of paper in between the furniture and the walls bordering it on the sides. It was an exact fit.

Then we moved to a house three times bigger than the townhouse and suddenly our furniture which previously seemed SO HUGE seemed rather small and insignificant. Walking into the master bedroom and looking around made you feel like a Smurf who had moved into Gargamel's castle. You could literally fit three of our beds side-by-side and still have room to spare.

By now, you have to know where there is going. OMG, we had enough space for a king-sized bed! *swoon*

Forget building a deck on the back of the house so that nobody walks out the second story patio doors and falls to their death, we so totally made a new bed a priority. Friday night was a magical night, and we spent it perusing a furniture clearance center for mattresses.

And SCORE! Is it firm? Is it soft? Is it a pillow top? Is it going to last more than ten minutes? I don't care! It's big. No, make that it's BIG!

I would like to thank God, Jesus, Allah, Braham, Michael Jackson, Rory Gilmore, all the babies in the world, and anybody who directly or indirectly contributed to the creation of king-sized beds.

Bliss.

Sweet, sweet bliss.

The great Peanut Butter Debate of 2009 isn't over quite yet. I need to test a few theories presented in comments. Results of this highly scientific testing will be forthcoming.

  1. I'm going to take a wild guess that Alexis LOVES the new bed too. So long as she can still sprawl sideways and wrap herself around at least one person's head.

Shoot, now you have plenty of room for her AND both dogs.

  4. Mister C & I stayed in temporary housing when we first moved to the Southwest and there was a king size bed there. We loved it so much that we bought and had one delivered to our new home when we finally moved in. Love, love, love my king size bed.

  7. Once upon a time my mom and I slept in a King size bed while we were at a hotel (on a trip for a friends wedding) and oh....I am in love too. And Oh....I do miss it and want one for little ole me....Oh and Hubby, of course. (No. Just for me!)

  8. @Jayna--Little Miss Trouble has felt the need to check out the new bed once, but since then has stayed in her own bed. And now that I say that, I'll have a toddler helmet for the next two weeks. Oh well! I have a king-sized bed!

  9. We bought a new bed while I was pregnant with Baby Girl (a sleep number - but we got it for a steal, thanks to my QVC connections) and it's a king. However, we have a full-size crib in our room when we have a newborn (so right after we bought and again NOW) and it's a shoehorn fit. I can't imagine anything else, though. We can all 6 sit in it at storytime! WOOHOO! So even if little Alexis decides to join you, you shouldn't have a toddler helmet...(notice I said "shouldn't" not "won't").

  10. omg I am sooo jealous. I think new bedroom furniture is going to be high up on our list... we have a queen bed from Ikea, mismatched dresser & nightstands, the dressers are SO OLD (they were Dan's dad's when he was a KID.) I long for a matchy-matchy grown-up KING SIZED bedroom set. And we'll finally have room for it too. WOOOO!

    Sweet dreams :)

We got a new bed when we moved back to Colorado (the woman who bought our house in California wanted our bed to be included . . . um, EWWW.) I said a queen-size bed was sufficient, and that there was no reason to get a king. I eat those words each and everyday.

  13. True story: A friend gave Gracie a set of slippers and a sleep-mask for a Christmas present. It was clearly a play set for kids, a little silky but nothing fancy. I didn't think much of it until Gracie came walking into the kitchen with her shirt off and (you guessed it) the sleep mask over her chest. I thought she was just being goofy. Until she piped up with, "Look! It's my bra!" I almost fell over laughing, thinking of how my modest neighbor would have reacted!

  14. @Katie--I am suddenly grateful that Alexis has decided that sleep mask is a headband. That she must wear every day. All day long. Heh.

  16. I am jealous. I want a king-sized bed. That way a large, preggo lady, a toddler, and a dude with stinky feet can all fit comfortably.

  17. Oooh, jealous! It would be so nice to not wake up with an elbow in my face. We have the room, but not the cash right now, due to a couple of big purchases this summer I have yet to blog about.

  18. YAY! We were going to get one when we moved but we just love the feel of our queen so much (and we aren't sure we can get the same one in king!) So we haven't switched... yet.

  19. I want a king size bed so bad, but I puffy heart love our mattress (queen size) and I know I'll never find another one like it. I can't give up all the comforty goodness for the sake of more space. Just can't.
