It Just Won't GO AWAY

I would have burned it, if it hadn't been so rancid that it refused to fuel a flame. The dress. The dress she wore all. freakin. summer. I was SO glad to see that sucker retire when the first fluffy white flakes fell to the ground last year.

She asked for it when gentler weather returned. "Where's my pink polka dot dress, momma?" she said in a sugary sweet voice.

"You're too big for it," I replied. I didn't actually know that for a fact. It didn't matter if she could still squeeze into it because I had banished it from her closet. BANISHED FOREVER.

Some time passed. In fact, a lot of time passed. The pink polka-dotted dress came to be filed under Things We Had Forgotten About.

Until we went to the Gap Outlet earlier tonight.

GAHFREAKINAIPPLEFLUOK

There it was. The used-to-be-OK-but-now-is-fug-cause-I've-seen-it-too-much dress hung on a rack near the back of the store. It was surrounded by dozens and dozens of matching atrocities. Undoubtedly it was available in every. single. size.

I tried to steer Alexis back out of the store. "I wanna see if they have a dress I like," she said as she barreled past me.

It was like time stood still between the moment when Alexis first caught site of the dress and the moment her mouth let out an excited squeal. "LOOK, MOMMA!" she blasted.

"I saw it," I replied. "We can't buy anything today, my dear," I told her. Cause, you know, a 3-year old is quick to buy that excuse.

"I love this dress, Momma," she gushed. "It's booty-full."

"I'm sorry, but we aren't buying it, Alexis," I said while quickly placing my arms over my face. I wanted to protect my eyes in case she started throwing things at me.

"Can we buy it later?" she asked. "Please?"

"Yeah, later. We can do later," I told her.

I'm going to have to find a new place to shop for kid clothes. Gap Outlet and I have to break up until that dress is gone.

Oye.

Oh Mom! If you still have the dress from before you should have it made into something else..Like a cute bear or something..If you sew or you can have someone do it for you..There are lots of things you can turn that little dress into....besides ashes! She has lots of cute clothes..you should make a quilt out of all the different fabrics! Ya know after you do the bazillion other things you have going on.

  2. You gotta start shopping solo or something. My kid (mercifully) is a boy and doesn't care what he puts on (yet, anyway). The only exception is that he has a favorite pair of pajamas - I can deal wtih the same pajamas every single day.

  3. But the picture is adorable! I still can't get past the fact that she wants to shop!

  4. @Jen--She LOVES to shop. She is forever asking to go to the mall. I have no idea why, really. It's rare that she actually gets something.

  6. hoo! I love that she is such a setermined feisty little thing, and thank goodness that you can still buy yourself time with the Later tactic. But, I Love her in that dress. Adorable!

  8. My 7 yr old has a favorite dress she wore two years ago...she wore it all the time. And as she got taller it eventually became a long shirt that she wears with leggings. I don't think I'll ever stop seeing that thing...ugghhh!

  9. Silly Mommy...You''re supposed to tell her it's not in her size. End of story. :-)

  10. we have a similar item our boy is attached to. It is also slightly...er...unattractive.

    Electric Orange Crocs.

I'll kinda be glad when he outgrows them too

  11. @3carnations--She knows how to check labels for her size. Swear to God, she would have called me on it. "Look! It says FOUR! That's my size!"

I learned that the hard way.

  12. Wait until she becomes 'brand' conscious. Then you are in for trouble. You will have to say "Sorry Alexis. Hollister doesn't make any clothes that fit you."

  13. We live in the land of Never Happy over here. Gracie cries that clothes don't fit and "OHMYGOD! BEE IS WEARING MY SHIRT!" (...that is two sizes too small.) Bee cries because "I wanna wear Gwacie's shirt!" (...that is two sizes too big.) Be thankful you just have ONE too-smart child you have to trick! :)

I dread the day my kids figure out what size they wear and can dispute me telling them it is not available!

Hubby brought Maren a super cute shirt back from Las Vegas that she won't grow into for another year. Yeah . . . try telling her that! I am going to have to bury the damn thing in the backyard to keep her from asking for it every. single. day. (It is simply too big for her to be wearing. And if she starts wearing it now, I will have to endure it for an extra year.)

  15. Oh, you are SO in trouble. I want to see lots of pictures of her in that pretty pink polka-dotted dress. :)

  16. I have one just like that. I was SO happy when she finally outgrew it. But then she just found another fugly dress to grow attached to. Geez.

  17. I think my wife feels that way about a lot of my clothes. I get attached to them. The bad thing for her is that I don't outgrow clothes anymore.

Now keep in mind that Sweetie Pie says I have no fashion sense.

But I think that dress is adorable.
