Le Sigh

Today was Day Two of Sick? Not sick? Sick? Not Sick? wherein my mission was detect even the tiniest of fevers. Not that I would ever lie about the health of my kid, but if I had spotted so much as 98.7 on a thermometer, Alexis' little butt was going to the doctor's office. Period. Even if I had to "misread" the thermometer as I reported to the on-call nurse so that there was no waffling about the necessity of the trip.

Of course, since I had the thermometer handy and I was doing my best to impersonate a helicopter parent, I was greeted with a child who was literally bouncing off the walls. LITERALLY. Apparently if you make a kid stay indoors for a couple of days, she will start vibrating. Like, wooooah. She. was. nuts. Even the Bulldog was freaked out and decided to hide in the basement so that no vibrating kids knocked her unconscious.

And then came the time for me to leave. As in, out of town. As in, I needed to leave Mr. Husband home alone with the vibrating preschooler for two days. And guess what! Go ahead, guess!

Her damn fever returned.

Just like that, the poor kid started saying, "I don't feel so good" and laying around on the couch and putting off more heat than a cup of Starbucks coffee. All it took was for Mr. Husband to pull into the driveway and me to grab my suitcase. It was already past hours for the doctor's office and well past the point of return for my trip.

So now I'm sitting in the Pittsburgh Airport and waiting to board a flight while my poor husband gets to deal with a sick kid. All by himself.

Godspeed, Mr. Husband. Godspeed.

(Yes, she's riding her bike in our dining room. Why? Because SHE CAN.)

Don't worry. She'll be fine. Let Dad earn his stripes. I know it's hard. I've totally been there.

  3. I got hot pink Barbie roller skates (yes skates, not blades) for Christmas one year and was THRILLED beyond belief to be allowed to skate on the then-linoleum kitchen floor with them...

  4. I would have a hard time leaving my sick kid but I am sure your husband can handle. HE has before, right? Right? Ahem....he'll be fine.

  5. Brave woman - not only to leave the sick kiddo, but a bike in the dining room? Very, very brave...

  6. Sick kids have all the fun . . .

As for the dining room . . . what good is it if you can't ride a bike in it?

  7. Ack, that's no fun. Hope she feels better soon, and I'm sure she and Mr. Husband will do just fine. Just went through the same thing with my little one when I wanted to leave her with a friend for her first overnight stay so that hubby and I could go out of town for the night. The trip was on and off and on and off all week. Luckily, our little one rallied and we got to go without feeling bad about dumping a sick child (feeling well, but running a fever) with a good friend. Wanted to keep that friend :)

  8. They'll be find. Hope she feels better though. Last time one of my kids was quite sick I was on vacay with my girlfriends. Guilty feelings? Yes. some. Enough to come home early. Oh no. ;-)

  9. I hope she feels better soon. I feel as bad for you as I do for her - I don't even like to leave to go to the store while my son is sick!

  10. Mr. Husband will do just fine. Dads need the opportunity to prove themselves like this, no matter how much they complain, and how much peanut butter and jelly you find on the furniture when you return. Alexis is in good hands. At the very least, Meg and Cody can clean up the peanut butter. And Alexis is with the one person who loves her (almost) as much as you do. :)

  11. Aww. And it is hard for you to be away when she is sick too. :(
    Good luck, Mr. Husband!

  12. My mom used to let us ride our big wheels in the house during the winter (and when my dad was at work). Some of my fave memories of my childhood.

Sorry I don't live closer - I would volunteer to do a wellness check, with popsicles and everything. Maybe some liquid sanity (cough:whiskey) for the Mr.

  13. Poor girl! I hope she feels better soon! Good luck, Mr. Husband. I hope if she is sick, she's that lie-on-the-couch-and-take-it-easy sick, not the bouncing-around-the-room-but-too-sick-to-go-anywhere sick.

  14. My girls are notorious for getting sick at the worst times. Thanksgiving, Christmas, the night before a special day at school - you name it. This year is no different - my youngest just started getting sick now and of course we are on fall break and Halloween is just around the corner. Le Sigh is right.
