Enough to Make My Mother Roll Over in her Grave

I really had a sad, sad childhood devoid of joys such as Barbie dolls, My Little Ponies, Strawberry Shortcake, and Play-Doh. Play-Doh was an especially contentious past-time because my Mother was convinced the stuff was a tool of the devil, sent to ruin carpet and furniture and make her clean for hours. One year for Christmas, my older cousin took pity on my poor little soul and gifted me with two wondrous jars of ooshy, gooshy joy. We weren't even to the car before the Play-Doh police were called and my happiness was confiscated.

And that is why I know this photo is enough for my Mother to turn over in her grave:

I am such a cool Mom. I bought Play-Doh months ago when daycare kept reporting that Alexis really loved playing with it. I've previously mentioned that whoever wrote the "loves Play-Doh!" notes must have been smoking crack, but lately Alexis has actually started to let me play with her. It's like a dream come true. We've rolled it, cut it with cookie cutters, and cooked it like you probably expect. When Alexis started to take our make-believe a little bit too seriously and began to taste-test her creations, I thought it was time we find some new ways to play.

So we started making impressions of stuff. Her nose, my nose, shoe bottoms, rocks, chairs, doll feet, dog feet, cat feet (don't try that one at home, you'll have to just trust me on that), dog noses, cat noses, cat ears, we've done it all. I don't know how she feels about it, but I've been having the time of my life.

Now if only she would let me play with the Legos . . .

  1. Isn't it wonderful to be able to live your childhood through your kids?

Did I say that out loud?

  2. You have to go to superdad.blogspot.com and check out The Stupidest Thing Ever post! I thought of you.

  3. Yep, I think I had kids so I could buy and play with the TOYS.

Personally, with me it was coloring books. As a kid I always had 'hand me down' ones with a few pictures already colored. I was the youngest of four.

I was so excited on the day when I could buy a NEW coloring book, pretend it was for my daughter and color it myself.

    Joy - pathetic but true.

HAHA. I love when adults enjoy children's toys as much or more than they do. And I'm a huge fan of play-dough, so I feel you.

  5. It's funny how we do do some of those things with our kids that our parents didn't/wouldn't do with us. Cute picture! Kids do love Playdough - don't they. I do too. See ya.

  6. Karen--It really is. Just don't tell the husbands we do it.

Jen--That cake is pretty much the funniest thing ever. Probably the first time anything Wal-Mart has done has been funny!

Leanne--Hand me down coloring books are the saddest thing of all time! You deserve a dozen just for yourself.

Not the Mama and Kellan--Play-Doh ROCKS!

  7. I just love to sit and smell Play-Doh. It is childhood personified. That and crayons. Oh, and Punkin eats it too. Play-Doh is about as difficult as Peanut Butter to get off the roof of a toddler mouth!

  8. Play-doh is not my thing. I'm more of a cover the whole table in paper and paint your hearts out kinda mom.

I'm pretty sure my mom would never let us do that!

  9. I remember playing with warm playdough that had just been made when I was a kid.

I actually posted a bunch of recipes for homemade playdough not that long ago.

  10. Considering my love of all things CEC, you know I'm a kid at heart. Did she mix the red & blue play doh to make purple? Cause Knute totally would've.
