Mother Nature, You've Been Warned

There is a frost advisory tonight in the Burgh. You want to know WHY there is a frost advisory in very late April in Pittsburgh? Because of this:

And this:

Oh, and this:

And don't forget about this:

And this:

And finally, this:

Uh huh. The one and only time EVER that I manage to get the containers on the deck all spiffy before Memorial Day and we have a frost advisory. I swear on a package of gummy worms, if so much as one speck of frost or one single solitary snowflake touches one of my plants, I'm going to go Britney Spears Shaved Head Crazy on Mother Nature.

Grr.

  1. At least you looked at the weather and can cover them. I planted my garden today and am hoping for the best. Stupid snow in the mountains. But it's still April. We get frost until mid-May.

  2. Oh, and those are gorgeous. I'm all jealous that you have flowers.

Lovely flowers. This one time my procrastination seems to be paying off for me. With the hot weather last week and all of the new growth in the garden, planting new flowers seemed a reasonable activity for the weekend but I didn't get around to it. Lucky me as they're calling for frost and maybe flurried for Ottawa tomorrow, too.

  4. Ok, so while the flowers are pretty.. I'm totally lovin' the Hundred Acre Wood characters you've got! :) Mebbe if I had me some of those, I could manage to actually keep something alive long enough to be maybe considered pretty! :)

  5. ah, the trials and tribulations of snow'ish country.

me? i wouldn't know. we don't do that here.

  6. Oh man! Those are gorgeous! I hope it doesn't frost there for you...that would mean it may frost here too :(

  7. YES, YES, YES!!! I, in my migraine fog, was out there last night in the sudden onset of cold (though not in Pittsburgh) pulling in every single outdoor plant I could. My kitchen looks like a green house of twisted proportion! UGH...

    Same thing over here.

    Except? The night before?

FRAKING SNOW. SNOOOOOW. SOmehow my petunia and my vining geranium baskets were not bit TOO bad but the apple tree blossoms are now shot, I fear for my rose bush that was sprouting well and I haven't even brought myself to look at the day lillies growing along the fence row.

  9. How'd it go? Did things survive?

I'm afraid to look out my window at my magnolia. This has been its best year yet since we planted it.

  10. WOAH there, sistah. Plants are nice and all (I can't grow 'em, myself and have a black thumb) but hell . . . Brit Brit crazy? I don't know that it's worth THAT extreme.

  11. When I talked to my dad yesterday he said they had snow. I thought he was joking. It's so hard for me to fathom, since we didn't have much of a winter here. Only one day did we even have a threat of a frost here.

Of course, we have the opposite problem with our garden here. We don't have one. The heat and humidity kills it before Memorial Day. I was a much better green thumb in WV.

  12. When I heard the frost advisory I thought of you, and somehow knew that is what your post would be about. I hope for Mother Nature's sake that none of the flowers were harmed.

  13. I sure wouldn't want to be Mother Nature right now...

  14. For the love of God, please do not shave your head!
Just so you know, we had frost this morning.

  15. What beautiful flowers! I saran wrapped my herbs last night....just in case.

  16. Yeah, I think our tomato plants are in for it!

  17. Everything survived the night.

    :-)

There's snow North of us, though, and the peeps are not amused. Serves them right for living too far North. As in 20 minutes North of us.

  18. So glad everything survived!

  19. Ugh!!! Hope you can get everything covered and kept warm!

Glad everything survived the night. It DID get cold last night. C'mon, Pittsburgh, get it together--it's SPRING!

  21. So glad to hear everything survived! That would have just DROVE ME NUTS. And I can't grow a dandelion. Well, I can, but it isn't like I'm actually in charge.

  22. So, is the container spiffy-ness still intact? Very, very beautemous flowers. Of course, here, it isn't TRULY safe for them until about June 15...and getting worse. To quote you, "Grrr." I don't know if even pansies would have made it through this past weekend here. Seeing your flowers makes me miss mine--and want some!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Beautiful flowers! I don't think it frosted here though. But it did get COLD!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Gorgeous...I'm glad to see that everything survived. Our weather is crazy too, and we're in California! Driving by the grape vines the other morning as they were being watered, the fences were COVERED in ice. Stupid cold weather. I'm ready for summer.

  25. please don't go all britney. it won't be pretty and you might scare your flowers to a shriveled doom.

  26. This is why I live.as.far.south.as.possible.But here in VA our weather is just as freakish as yours. Did ya see we lost half a city Monday? We never get tornados. Freakish.
Oh and I live 15 minutes from where that bad boy touched down.
    Hope your flowers are okay!

  27. Your flowers are beautiful. We had snowflakes this week and rain. Brrr!

  28. I have never seen Winnie the Pooh pot holders!

    ReplyDelete
  29. gorgeous! Figures doesn't it? Hope they survive. Are those strawberries & tomoatoes I saw??

    ReplyDelete
  30. Most of that looks like you can bring it in, right? We had a frost last week, but nothing was damaged. Stupid weather man.

Oh no....my Dad (the green thumb) always said to never put anything that is subject to frost outside before May 15th.

Hopefully they will endure. Maybe you should put a plastic bag over them tonight to give them a little protection.

Listen to me....I kill all plants. So my advise may not be the best.

They look beautiful though...so maybe you can blow up the pics and just hang them on the deck!

Tell me about it. I actually covered all the flowers and pretty shrubs with a barbie sheet, smurf sheet and a spiderman sheet. I wasn't taking any chances yo. My neighbors all laughed at me, but I like my flowers and I paid good money for them.

I am very bitter about the lack of warmth at the moment.

  33. You got cocky and broke the rule! The never-plant-before-Memorial-Day rule...unless you like living in the edge then you ignore that one and go by the never-plant-before-mother's-day rule. I must say it is fun living somewhere that I can break those rules after all of my years up north - now if only I could get the boxes unpacked so I could plant something.

  34. Your flowers are gorgeous! i hope the frost doesn't hurt them, but you night want to cover then up just in case.

OK, I'm going to be the smart ass mouth bitch in the bunch. Since most of them are potted, couldn't you just bring them inside? Because you've got such beautiful hair, I'd hate for you to shave it off. Unless you're donating it to Locks of Love, and then I'll come over with the clippers myself to do it for you.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yep I'm with you. I've got sticky notes all over the house to remind myself to bring in my new plants tonight.

    I'll forget though.

    Lovely shots! Good on you!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Glad they survived! They look beautiful!

I'm not good with plants. Animals, I'm great with. Plants are lucky to survive and encounter with me. So I'm very impressed with yours!

    ReplyDelete
  38. we had a frost advisory down here in DC, too! It was only 37 when I got up, but by the time I left for work, I left my jacket in the house. The sun here is hot as...uh...the sun. Yeah. I'll keep it clean.
I have been too lazy and cheap to actually spend money on any plants (yet), so no "grrr" there...but "grrr" for your sake.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Those are great! How amazing! And it's nice to know I'm not the only one who can have that kind of effect on the weather too. I say drag inside everything you can and cover the rest. Do you have wall-o-waters out there? They could help.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Can you believe it snowed here the other day. Not big flakes snow, but still. Thank god my plants survived. Your flowers are beautiful by the way.

    ReplyDelete
  41. My mother taught me to not plant any of my annuals until after Mothers Day to avoid the threat of frost. Hope your pretty plants survived!

    ReplyDelete
  42. It NEVER fails. Damn that Murphy.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Very pretty, I hope they survive.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Those flowers are gorgeous! Makes me long for summer NOW.
I hope the advisory turns out to be for nothing.
We always wait until Memorial Day to do anything with flowers because our spring weather is always so crappy.
    Good luck!

  45. LMAO... I heard about the frost coming.

I always wait until MOther's Day to plant mine.

BTW... you did an AWESOME job with your flowers. Way to be on top of things! :)

  46. Your flowers look so pretty!

Well if it's any consolation to you I get the same thing over here but it's a heat wave. The second I plant stuff then the temp rockets up to upper 90s and all my pretty plants die. Hope you didn't get any frost. I think you can cover them with plastic though right?

    ReplyDelete
  47. dude, I KNOW. There was SNOW FALLING ON MY CAR this morning when I was driving Maggie to daycare. Bullcrap, that's what that is.

    ReplyDelete
  48. That's a lot of plants to cover! I'm stating the obvious, right!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm confused ... why would frost have anything to do with those pretty things you buy from Michael's? What, you mean yours are REAL?

Jeez. Okay, so I'm kinda impressed over here, but just kinda.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Those are all beautiful! So what happened? Did you get the frost?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Look at you, Little Miss Green Thumb! I'm doing a no-frost dance for you now.

And my co-workers are looking at me funny - but hey, I'm all about takin one for the team.

  53. So...I am SUPER behind here, but it's May 1st and SNOWING here today. I know I am delirious from this fever, but I think maybe I might go completely insane if it doesn't warm up.

Your flowers are beautiful by the way. Gracie is jealous jealous. Since we're moving we haven't planted anything. Although since it's snowing its probably a good thing we haven't.

so pretty and I love the tigger and piglet pots. i'm more of an eeyore kind of gal but I love all those characters.

  55. Ugh. I feel your pain. 39 degrees out right now. I've learned the hard way to not put plants out before the frost date, which is Mother's Day here in the Mile High.

    ReplyDelete
  56. gorgeous flowers!!!!!! love them--please get the blankets ready a few more times though. my little pretty ones have spent their first week with me in the garage!
